Eduardo Kac

Who is Eduardo Kac?
Eduardo Kac is a Brazilian avant-garde artist whose work fuses art and science. He explores areas such as biology, technology, and artistic expression. His works push the boundaries of contemporary art by questioning ethical, aesthetic, and philosophical issues. Kac focuses particularly on life, which he deconstructs and reassembles through works that explore modern biology and genetics.
What is Bio-art and how did Eduardo Kachin revolutionize it?
Bioart is an artistic practice that uses living organisms or biological processes as a medium. Eduardo Kac is famous for his work "Alba", a transgenic fluorescent green rabbit created in 2000, which perfectly illustrates this concept. This rabbit, nicknamed "GFP Bunny", was genetically modified by inserting a green fluorescent protein (GFP) gene. The work provoked an important ethical debate on genetic manipulation for artistic purposes.

Did you know? The fluorescent rabbit "Alba" has sparked a global debate about the ethics of using genetic manipulation in the arts.
How did Eduardo Kachin explore telepresence and telerobotics?
In 1994, Kac began exploring new communication technologies through his telepresence and telerobotics projects. He allowed the public to interact with his works remotely via the Internet. An emblematic example of this work is his project "Teleporting an Unknown State" (1989), where viewers could control a robot remotely, prefiguring interactive digital art and virtual reality.

What is Eduardo Kac's legacy?
Kac’s legacy lies in his ability to challenge the boundaries of artistic and scientific disciplines. His work questions concepts of communication, human identity, and life in a changing world. He continues to inspire new generations of artists and scientists to explore the intersection of art and biology.
Did you know? Eduardo Kac is considered the father of bioart, an emerging practice that mixes art and biotechnology.
